A man who admitted to the horrific killing of his own dog, Jazz, faced a Criminal Court on Thursday (March 19). The horrific case of animal abuse has sent shockwaves through welfare circles and the wider public.

The court heard harrowing details of how, in December 2024, the defendant deliberately tied a concrete block to the leash of his seven-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier cross before throwing her into the marsh at Biache-Saint-Vaast, Pas-de-Calais, France. In a chilling confession, the man admitted to remaining at the scene for 20 agonising minutes, watching as Jazz struggled and ultimately drowned.

The act, reportedly triggered by a difficult personal breakup, has been widely condemned as one of the most distressing cases of animal cruelty in recent memory in France.

The dog’s body reportedly remained submerged for nearly a month before being recovered, adding to the heartbreak and outrage felt by many. Both the Stéphane Lamart Association and the 30 Million d’Amis Foundation joined the case as civil parties, calling for the maximum penalties allowed by law, French news outlet Actu.fr reported.

Stéphane Lamart, president of the animal welfare group, said: “I am appalled that a man could even conceive such an idea and attack an animal in this way, going so far as to drown it. This dog spent her last moments in panic, struggling, but condemned by the weight of the concrete block tied to her leash, she inevitably sank.

“An animal that trusted her owner until the very last second met her end in unbearable conditions. It’s sickening.

“Such actions must be punished with the utmost severity, including prison sentences. This is what society expects today.”

The case, which was originally scheduled for June 2025 but postponed several times, finally reached the courtroom this week. Animal welfare campaigners and members of the public gathered outside the court, many holding photos of Jazz and calling for justice.

A spokesperson for the 30 Million d’Amis Foundation said: “This case is a tragic reminder of the suffering animals can endure at the hands of those they trust most. We hope the court sends a strong message that such cruelty will not be tolerated.”

While the hearing has now taken place, the final verdict and sentencing details have yet to be made public.

The outcome is being closely watched by animal lovers and campaigners across the country, all hoping for a decision that reflects the gravity of the crime and serves as a deterrent to future acts of cruelty.

Animal lovers are reportedly awaiting the court’s decision, as the memory of Jazz’s suffering continues to fuel calls for tougher penalties and greater protection for animals, ensuring her tragic story is not forgotten.
