The Gavin and Stacey star cannot escape the popularity of the show sometimes – and was even bombarded by a fan who shouted one of Nessa’s favourite sayings at her mother-in-law’s funeral
Ruth Jones was pestered by a crazed fan at a funeral who was shouting quotes from Gavin & Stacey at her.
The TV star, who co-wrote the hit show, got a shock when they chanted ‘What’s occurring?’ – the catchphrase used by her character Nessa – while she was paying her respects to her late mother-in-law.
She said: “We were in the line-up after the service… it was my mother-in-law’s funeral.
“I was very sad, because I was very fond of my mother-in-law, and then this gentleman came up and went, ‘What’s occurring?’ and I went, ‘Well, just mourning my dear mother-in-law, that’s what’s occurring’.”
Ruth regularly has fans saying her famous catchphrases at her.
She added: “It’s funny… I think people think it’s the first time they’ve said it to you.”
Ruth became a national treasure during her years playing Nessa on the BBC comedy alongside pal and co-writer James Corden, who played Smithy.
It pulled in record ratings for its finale in 2024, which saw the much-loved characters finally tie the knot.
But she has insisted there is no chance of the show returning in the future.
She added: ”We called it the finale and I’m not being funny, but if you call something the finale, then that’s the end, isn’t it?
“You don’t want to see Nessa and Smithy putting the bins out. You don’t want to see that domestic bliss.
“It’s definitely over. We are very lucky to have had a 17-year run with it and it is now time to shut the door and let those families get on with their lives in private.”
