At least two individuals killed and two cops wounded throughout ten-minute gun battle exterior Israeli Consulate in Istanbul after IDF issued warning to Iranians: Live updates

The Israeli consulate in Istanbul was today attacked by a group of terrorists, one of whom was killed following a ten-minute gun battle.

Two officers were wounded following the attack this morning. Footage showed a police officer pulling out a gun and taking cover as gunshots were heard. One person was seen covered in blood.

Bodies were seen laying on nearby streets and grassy areas. Local media reported that two police officers had been injured in the incident, which occurred immediately outside a tower where the Israeli consulate is located in Istanbul’s financial district.

Since the Hamas-Israel war began in 2023, a heavily armed police presence has been maintained in the area near the Israeli consulate.

A source with knowledge of the matter said there were no Israeli diplomats stationed in Turkey at present.

Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said they arrived in Istanbul by a rental vehicle from Izmit and one of the assailants was affiliated with an ‘organisation that exploits the region’.

Turkish officials would not immediately reveal the group the attacker was linked to but Turkish media said it could be Islamic State group.

It comes after Israel issued a chilling warning to the people of Iran, telling them that using trains or going near railway lines will put their lives in danger.

The IDF told Iranians via its Persian-language account on X that they should avoid using public transport until 9pm, Tehran time, several hours before Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

‘Your presence on trains and near railway lines endangers your life’, the Israeli military warned.

Israel has played a key role alongside the US in the war in the Middle East, which began on February 28 after both nations launched strikes against Iran.

Since then, the conflict has grown in scale, violence and complexity, with global economies now suffering greatly thanks to Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, an important waterway that is vital to the trade of oil and gas.

Trump’s patience for the conflict appears to be rapidly thinning. At a chaotic press conference at the White House last night, he said he was ‘not at all’ concerned about possibly committing war crimes after he threatened to destroy Iran’s bridges and power plants if Tehran did not meet his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8pm EST.

And confidence in Trump’s ability to quickly end the war appears to be waning.

Brent crude, the international standard, rose to about $111 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate – the US’ standard – rose to $115 per barrel, its highest level in a month.

Global markets have been betting that skilled diplomacy will see the conflict draw to a close soon, but peace talks have so far made little headway.

UN nuclear watchdog says attacks on Iranian atomic plant post ‘must stop’

The chief of the UN nuclear watchdog on Monday warned that attacks near Iran’s Bushehr atomic power plant ‘pose a very real danger to nuclear safety and must stop.’

The facility, located in the south of Iran and equipped with a 1,000-megawatt reactor, has been targeted four times since the US-Israeli war on Iran began. The latest strike was reported by Iranian state media on Saturday.

Strikes near the operating plant ‘could cause a severe radiological accident with harmful consequences for people and the environment in Iran and beyond,’ said Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on X.

Russia, whose specialists help operate the plant, said the strikes risked a ‘radiological disaster more devastating than Chernobyl.’

‘We once again urgently call for an immediate cessation of hostilities,’ the Russian foreign ministry said.

The IAEA analysed satellite imagery of the site, confirming the impact of the latest strike, which did not damage the power plant.

Grossi added that one strike hit just 246 feet from the plant perimeter.

‘A nuclear facility and surrounding areas should never be struck,’ he said.

Bushehr, built with help from Russia, is Iran’s only operational nuclear power reactor, according to the IAEA.

Russian state media reported that 198 workers at the plant were evacuated just after the latest strike, with about 100 Russian staff remaining at the site.
