Manchester United have announced that Harry Maguire has signed a new contract, ending transfer speculation he was set to leave the club as a free agent.
Maguire’s new terms were confirmed on Tuesday. The 33-year-old was due to be out of contract at the end of the season but he will remain a United player next season and will not depart as a free agent. The defender has agreed a one-year extension with the club holding the option to extend to an extra year.
The England international has been a key figure in the backline since recovering from an injury problem at the turn of the year. Maguire has started all 10 of Carrick’s games as manager, losing just one, as the Red Devils climbed up the Premier League table.

Speaking to the club, Maguire, who has won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup since his £80million move from Leicester City in 2019, said: “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”

United teased the new deal in a social media video uploaded on Tuesday morning where a mocked-up contract was taken around their Carrington training ground with an empty name and signature space left blank, fuelling suspicion over who was set to commit their future to the club.
Michael Carrick’s long-term future at the club is still unclear after the club legend has impressed immensely since taking the reins on a short-term contract until the end of the season.
The 44-year-old has steered United up the table to 3rd, and into a prime position to qualify for the Champions League next season.
However, a decision is yet to be made regarding if Carrick will be in the dugout for the first game of next season or whether a more experienced outside hire will be made.
