Need to know: Prince William’s Royal Rethink as He ‘Runs Out of Royals’ for Slimmed-Down Monarchy

  • Prince William is reportedly considering a new generation of senior working royals as experts warn he’s “running out of royals” to represent the Firm.
  • With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping away from royal duties in 2020 and Andrew being removed from public life, the future King faces a shrinking pool of working royals. Royal expert Christopher Wilson suggests William might be eyeing Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, for a more prominent role.
  • “That leaves dark-horse contender Lady Louise Windsor, 22, who charms all who meet her and could be a decorative and useful asset to the royal team,” Wilson told the Daily Mail. However, he warned that her protective mother Sophie might prefer to keep her daughter out of the spotlight.
  • The 22-year-old Lady Louise, currently studying at St Andrew’s University where William and Kate first met, has already made appearances at major royal events including Royal Ascot and Trooping the Colour. Her younger brother James, 18, is also being considered as a potential working royal.
  • Despite their royal heritage as grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II, both Louise and James were raised without HRH titles to ensure a more normal upbringing. “We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living,” Duchess Sophie explained in a 2020 interview.
  • William’s plans for a “slimmed-down monarchy” could face challenges as “public demand for the attendance of a royal to mark major and minor events up and down the country remains as high as ever,” according to Wilson.
