Two teenagers died when a car left a bridge and collided with a minibus near junction 20 on Friday afternoon, with four minibus passengers hospitalised
Two teenagers have died following a devastating collision on the M1 that saw a car plunge from a bridge. Emergency crews were called to the scene near Junction 20 at 1.33pm on Friday, April 10, following reports of the smash.
The incident unfolded when a blue vehicle, which was travelling along Gilmorton Lane towards Lutterworth, left the road bridge above the motorway. The car then struck a minibus heading southbound on the M1 after departing the overpass.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service rushed to the scene. Authorities confirmed that three others have been left hospitalised following the incident.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Four people in the minibus – a white Fiat Ducato – were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“The driver, a man, has been discharged and three women remain in hospital. The two people in the blue car, both teenagers, were declared dead at the scene.”
The carriageway is expected to stay shut for several hours while forensic examination continues.
Officers are appealing for anyone who was driving on Gilmorton Lane or on the M1 in the vicinity of junction 20 – in either direction – at approximately 1.30pm on Friday afternoon to come forward.
Anyone possessing dashcam footage or who spotted either vehicle prior to the crash is urged to contact police.
They are advised to either call 101, quoting incident number 308 of 10th April or visit the Leicestershire Police website.
