Denim is a truly universal fabric and a staple in every wardrobe because no matter your age, shape or size, there’s always a style that will make you look and feel fabulous.

If you’re unsure of what’s trending or what looks best when you’re 50-plus, I’m here to help you think outside the box – denim doesn’t just mean jeans. Here are the best ways to wear dresses and shirts too.

So read on for the only style tips you’ll need when it comes to all things denim.

Ditch the wide-leg jean – it’s back to straight

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s iconic and pared-back 90s style has taken over the fashion world in recent months. Her classic looks have been at the forefront of fashion campaigns thanks to the recent smash hit TV series, Love Story.

So follow in Carolyn’s footsteps and wave goodbye to super-wide legs – we’re going back to classic, straight-leg jeans. The tip is to get them as close fitting as possible. You want them to edge on skinny without clinging to your legs. What’s best is that they’re a timeless style – think strutting down the street in your Levi 501s in your 50s while matching your daughter in her 20s. And footwear won’t be a problem. Pair the straight-leg jean with flats or heels.

Avoid white – opt for something softer

A lot of women over a certain age love to wear white denim and I’m not saying you can’t, but look for softer shades such as ecru and off-white. It looks far more sophisticated and is less harsh against skin tones.

Viktor Rolf’s SS26 collection featured the perfect pair of wide-leg jeans. If you’re a fan of relaxed silhouettes, Boden’s pleated are a great high street pair for daily wear. If you’re looking for an alternative to a trouser, The Fold’s Mercer jeans are smart enough for the office and a great alternative to a cigarette trouser for 60-plus. And if you prefer skirts then Wiggykit have the perfect button-through maxi that you’ll be wearing all summer.

Rules for denim dresses

Don’t rule out wearing denim dresses, it’s about finding the right silhouette. Avoid anything that falls above the knee and anything that’s tight fitting – and leave the boho look behind. Sleeves are a must, even if it’s a cap style, and you can never go wrong with a slight voluminous puff. Shirt dresses are a great design as they allow you to customise the look, plus they’re extremely forgiving when A-line in shape.

Mint Velvet’s mid-indigo wash features an elasticated waistband, great for fluctuation and comfort. If you’re wanting a smarter style to take you from desk to dinner, opt for Karen Millen’s tailored midi.

Double denim

Yes, you can wear double denim but if you’re wanting to keep it classy and not look like you’ve been trawling through a teenager’s wardrobe, then avoid a big clash. If you can find matching denim in the same shade, you’ll instantly look put together in a grown-up manner.

Aje sent matching sets down their SS26 catwalks and Oprah opted for a double denim look courtesy of Chloe for her final appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. If there’s one woman who knows about denim, it’s Donna Ida. Fit, quality, she has it all and not just her jeans but shirts and jackets too.

Denim jackets are great but if, as you get older and you’re looking for an alternative, you’ll find a denim shirt to be extremely flattering. They’re easier to mix into your wardrobe and are great for adding a youthful spin on your everyday look.

You can layer them with T-shirts and knits to wear year-round. With Nothing Underneath are the best in the business when it comes to shirts and their classic denim cotton is the perfect throw-on style.
