A current inmate stands accused of attempting to murder an imam by stabbing him five times in the head and neck, a court was told.

Ahmed Alid, 47, is alleged to have tried to kill Roderic Vassie at HMP Full Sutton, on August 8, 2025, following Friday prayers, the Old Bailey heard on Friday.

He is accused of inflicting serious injury, stated Philip McGhee, the prosecutor. Mr McGhee said Alid “shouted words which suggest ideological alignment with Isis”. Alid also faces charges of possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a piece of metal, within HMP Full Sutton, near York.

He was moved to HMP Wakefield where he is alleged to have assaulted prison officer Sarah Mitchell on October 21 last year, resulting in a broken nose and bruising among other injuries, the court was told.

Alid has been charged with assaulting Ms Mitchell causing her actual bodily harm.

The defendant appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday via video link from HMP Wakefield.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb announced his trial will occur at Sheffield Crown Court on November 30 this year.

A plea hearing is scheduled for August 28 at the Old Bailey.

Through his solicitor, Alid indicated he will be entering not guilty pleas.

Alid was remanded in custody.

“A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.”
