A top hiking influencer has died aged 49 after a sudden medical incident while on a remote outdoor expedition. Ali Leiniö, who cultivated a devoted fanbase online through his trekking and nature content, was discovered deceased in the wilderness after he failed to return from a skiing adventure.

The self-taught filmmaker had gathered over 86,000 subscribers on YouTube, with his footage – showcasing demanding hikes and isolated expeditions – drawing hundreds of thousands of views. His passing was confirmed by close colleagues, who revealed he experienced a medical emergency while travelling solo.

Leiniö had been skiing across a remote region when the tragedy struck, with his body subsequently found in early April.

Additional information circulated within the hiking community indicated he may have experienced a seizure. The content creator had established himself as one of Finland’s most prominent outdoor influencers, despite only beginning hiking in his 30s.

He subsequently transformed his enthusiasm into a full-time endeavour, producing travel documentaries and immersive footage that portrayed the harsh realities of wilderness living.

Though he delivered his content in Finnish, his videos attracted a worldwide viewership through automatic English subtitles.

In 2022, he received recognition at the Tubecon Awards, where he claimed the travel influencer of the year accolade.

Leiniö’s final video was posted merely two weeks prior to his death. Fans and fellow outdoor lovers have since paid tribute, describing him as passionate, approachable and deeply connected to nature.

One mate said meeting him felt like “reuniting with an old acquaintance”, adding that his videos were “outstanding” and inspired many to explore the outdoors.

Leiniö had previously spoken about turning his life around, revealing he had overcome a troubled past before finding purpose in hiking and nature.
