President Donald Trump has argued that the shooting at Saturday’s Correspondents’ Dinner is ‘exactly the reason’ why a ballroom should be constructed at the White House.
Saturday night’s annual press event erupted into chaos when shots rang out, as harrowing images revealed top administration officials rushing out of the Washington Hilton.
A gunman stormed security at the hotel, prompting several armed agents to rush the suspect and exchange gunfire.
A Secret Service member was shot in their protective gear and was injured but is expected to recover. Everyone else was unharmed. Law enforcement officials later confirmed the suspect as a California teacher named Cole Thomas Allen, 31.
The president argued in a post on Truth Social that a White House ballroom would have prevented the shooting, writing: ‘What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE.’
Trump’s construction on the White House has prompted a slew of backlash, but the president has now claimed that, in light of the recent incident, the ballroom ‘cannot be built fast enough.’
‘While beautiful, it has every highest level security feature there is plus, there are no rooms sitting on top for unsecured people to pour in, and is inside the gates of the most secure building in the World, The White House,’ he added.

Donald Trump boldly claimed on Truth Social that the chaos that unfolded last night would not have happened if there were a ‘safe and secure’ ballroom at the White House.

Fox host says gunman could have caused ‘bloodbath’
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade spoke about his experience at the dinner during Sunday morning’s broadcast.
He said the event space at the Washington Hilton was ‘packed’ and he had never seen so many attendees at a White House Correspondents Dinner before.
‘If that guy got in the room, it would’ve been a blood bath,’ Kilmeade said.
He added that the number of armed security officials at the event would have likely resulted in massive gunfire.
The gunman exchanged gunfire with armed guards in the hotel. One guard was injured in his protective vest but has been released from the hospital, according to USSS Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi. Everyone else was unharmed.

FBI swarm suspect’s California home
The Federal Bureau of Investigation swarmed Cole Thomas Allen’s home on Saturday night after he was arrested for opening fire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Authorities gathered outside a California home linked to Allen, blocking off a residential street in Torrance with caution tape.
Photos from the raid showed law enforcement in tactical gear and armored vehicles lining the street as officers assessed the scene, with officials telling the Daily Mail they were working to access Allen’s car.
A source told the Daily Mail that this shooting had likely been planned for a while.
A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told the Daily Mail they believe Allen acted alone and are tracing his finances to determine how he paid for the hotel stay.
Authorities reveal alleged shooter’s target
Attorney General Todd Blanche has revealed that investigators believe the suspect was targeting members of the Trump administration.
Cole Thomas Allen, 31, was named as the alleged gunman last night after he stormed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton.
‘It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,’ Blanche told NBC’s Meet the Press.
The suspect is believed to have purchased the firearms he carried within the last couple of years, Blanche said. He is not being cooperative and is expected to face multiple charges on Monday.
‘He failed,’ Blanche added. ‘Law enforcement did their jobs.’
Security concerns arise after shooting
Security concerns have risen after a shooter attempted to storm the Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton last night.
Trump has now argued that continuing construction on his controversial White House ballroom would have prevented the chaos that ensued on Saturday night.
Construction is estimated to cost around $400 million. It was temporarily halted by a federal judge in March after a lawsuit brought on by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The preservation group had most recently argued in court that Trump needed Congressional approval before making such major changes to the White House.
US District Judge Richard Leon wrote in his decision that no statute ‘comes close’ to giving the President the authority to take on the project without Congressional oversight.
Trump reveals Melania’s chilling words as gunshots rang out
Donald Trump has revealed what First Lady Melania Trump told him just after bullets were fired in the Washington Hilton Hotel during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
‘It’s always shocking when something like this happens,’ the President said at a White House press briefing in the West Wing within an hour of the violence.
‘The fact that we were sitting next to each other, the first lady on my right, and I heard a noise,’ Trump said, adding they thought ‘it was either a tray or a bullet.’

FBI Director Kash Patel acted swiftly to protect others as shots rang out at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Chaos broke out inside the Washington Hilton after a shooter opened fire in the lobby around 8.15pm, prompting the Secret Service to rush into action, securing President Donald Trump and thousands of guests.
Patel, who was a guest of the Daily Mail alongside his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, immediately instructed others at the table to get down.
As reporters huddled on the floor and underneath the tables, Patel yelled ‘stay down.’
Daily Mail reporters in attendance reported hearing three to four shots and hearing Secret Service agents yelling to get down.
When it was safe to stand back up, Patel and Wilkins asked the reporters standing next to them if they were OK, and then were escorted out of the ballroom by his security detail.
