Matheus Cunha is optimistic he will be available to face Liverpool on Sunday despite the forward being ruled out of Manchester United’s Premier League encounter with Brentford tonight.

The Brazilian sat out portions of training last week after experiencing muscle tightness and hasn’t made sufficient progress to earn his place in the squad against the Bees.

However, United remain confident Cunha’s problem is merely a minor setback and that he will be ready to rejoin the squad for the Old Trafford clash with Arne Slot’s team at the weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports before kick-off, Carrick said on Cunha: “He just had a bit of a sore hip flexor after the [Chelsea] game. We thought he might have been okay but unfortunately he doesn’t make tonight.”

Cunha had featured in 10 consecutive matches for United under Michael Carrick, though he was withdrawn with nine minutes remaining after netting the decisive goal in the victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

His spot in the starting line-up has been filled by Amad, while Carrick has received a boost with Patrick Dorgu’s return to a matchday squad for the first time in over three months.

Cunha stepped into Dorgu’s position on the left flank when the 21-year-old sustained a hamstring problem against Arsenal in January. That marked Carrick’s second fixture as manager and Dorgu had found the net in both outings before suffering his setback.

His comeback had originally been targeted for the Liverpool fixture, though he has made encouraging strides during his recovery and takes his place among the substitutes against Brentford.

Leny Yoro has also been named on the bench after sitting out the triumph at Chelsea due to a hip complaint. Ayden Heaven partners Harry Maguire who returns from suspension.
