Brits evacuated from virus-hit cruise ship head to covid quarantine facility

  • British passengers from a virus-hit cruise ship are being evacuated to the UK’s original Covid quarantine facility after a deadly hantavirus outbreak.
  • The MV Hondius docked in Tenerife on Sunday morning with Brits set to be flown home to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral. WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced: “The disembarkment of the first group of MV Hondius passengers has started.”
  • Passengers will be housed in a separate block away from public hospital areas for up to 72 hours. Blue tarpaulin fences were erected around accommodation blocks on Sunday morning.
  • The outbreak has claimed three lives with eight total cases reported, including three Britons. Two confirmed British cases are hospitalised in South Africa and the Netherlands.
  • A third suspected British case is on remote Tristan da Cunha where six paratroopers were parachuted in with medical supplies. The Ministry of Defence said it was the first time medical personnel had been parachuted in for humanitarian assistance.
  • Returning Brits must self-isolate for 45 days and cannot use public transport to get home.
