Adult star was ‘crying on flooring over packing containers stuffed with receipts’ earlier than ‘studying about cash’

Adult star Alix Lynx has revealed the biggest mistake she made during her 13 years in the adult industry – not learning about money sooner.

After entering the industry as a cam girl in 2012 before transitioning into mainstream adult movies and eventually building a thriving business on a popular adult content platform, Alix has watched the adult industry completely transform over the last decade.

But despite her success, she admits she spent years feeling intimidated and overwhelmed by finances behind the scenes. She said: “I remember sitting on my apartment floor crying over shoeboxes full of receipts because I had no idea what I was doing.

“People assume once you start making money everything becomes easy, but honestly, I was a mess financially in the beginning.”

Now, after more than a decade in the industry and years spent building her personal brand into a successful business, Alix says she considers herself “a businesswoman first”. She added: “You have to treat this like a real business if you want longevity.

“I’ve been in this industry for 13 years and I’ve seen so many girls make a lot of money very quickly and then lose it because they never learned how to manage it. From 25 to 28, I was laser-focused on building my brand and making money.

“But I didn’t properly implement the missing piece, which was a good tax strategist, financial advisor, and bookkeeper. I should have done that from the beginning.”

Alix (@‌thealixlynx) wishes she had understood earlier that success in the adult industry is about far more than huge paychecks and spent her time learning how to manage, protect and grow her earnings. She said: “I knew enough to open a Roth IRA, but I wasn’t thinking long term.

“I probably left so much money on the table because I didn’t know what I was doing. I was intimidated by finances and honestly scared of it.”

Alix says financial literacy is especially important for women in the adult industry, many of whom enter the business without prior education around taxes, investing or entrepreneurship. “The United States tax system is literally designed to benefit businesses, but most creators don’t know that,” she said.

“That’s why education is key. You don’t know what you don’t know.”

Alix says many creators make the mistake of overspending once they start earning large amounts of money quickly, especially if they come from financially unstable backgrounds. “Most people don’t come from anything when they start this career,” she said.

“Suddenly you’re making all this money and you think, ‘I can finally buy all the things I never had’.

“But you have to be disciplined. Give every dollar a job. That advice completely changed my mindset.” The adult star says one of the biggest misconceptions about the industry is that making money automatically means financial security.

“You can make a lot of money and still be financially irresponsible,” she said. “I learned that the hard way.

“You have to actually know where your money is going, what you’re investing in, what you’re spending, and how to structure your business properly.” After discovering financial mentors and educating herself through books, podcasts and business courses, Alix says her relationship with money completely transformed.

“In 2018, I found Amanda Frances, (who appeared in the most recent season of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hill) the ‘money queen,’ and that changed my entire life,” she said. “She helped me break down limiting beliefs around money and stop being afraid of it.

“Now I feel empowered instead of intimidated.” The creator says financial literacy became especially important once she realised how many moving parts there were behind the scenes of running a successful adult business.

“I created a corporation but I wasn’t even doing it properly for the first two years,” she said. “You have to put yourself on payroll, pay state and federal taxes correctly, organise your write-offs — it’s a whole process.

“Nobody teaches you this stuff.” Alix says creators should stop trying to do everything alone and instead invest in professional guidance as early as possible.

“People think hiring a tax strategist or financial advisor is too expensive, but honestly, they usually save you way more money than they cost,” she said. “Don’t just hire some random accountant your parents know.

“Find someone who understands businesses, taxes and investments.” She now runs her career like a full-scale business, employing a team that includes a PR manager, social media strategist, financial advisor and bookkeeper, while carefully tracking expenses and investments.

“I have an intimate relationship with my money now,” she said. “Every month I go through my statements and ask myself, ‘What is this charge?

“Why am I paying for this?’ You can’t just turn a blind eye to your finances and hope for the best.”

Despite earning significantly more than she did before entering the industry, Alix says she still lives strategically and avoids unnecessary spending wherever possible. “I rent designer clothes instead of buying them, I use credit card points for travel, and I still buy lingerie on resale sites or wait for sales,” she said.

Alix added: “People assume making money means spending recklessly, but saving and investing is sexy. Watching my bank account and net worth grow every month feels better than buying another designer bag.

“That feeling is unmatched.” Now, after years of learning through trial and error, Alix hopes speaking openly about her financial mistakes will help younger creators avoid the same stress and anxiety she experienced early in her career.

“I’ve come miles from where I started,” she said. “If I can learn this stuff, anybody can.
