A 37-year-old Brit has tragically lost his life following a brawl in the early hours on Tenerife’s most notorious party strip.
Another British man, just 23 years old, has been arrested in the bustling nightlife district of Las Veronicas in Playa de las Americas. Television Canarias reports that two individuals were involved in the altercation, the victim and the alleged perpetrator, with the latter being apprehended around 1am.
He was detained by security staff at the club and bar strip who kept him in custody until the National Police arrived. Emergency services rushed to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the critically injured man, but sadly nothing could be done to save him.
Authorities promptly ordered the closure of nearby establishments.
The National Police have launched an investigation to establish the facts. Initial reports suggest the melee involved several people and included the hurling of glasses.
The deceased man is believed to have been holidaying on the island. Las Veronicas is Tenerife’s premier and only dedicated party strip, once infamous for brawls and drug dealing.
It attracts thousands of Brits as the bars and clubs remain open until the early hours. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements.
They are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch.
Meanwhile, at least three people have been stabbed at a train station after the suspected knifeman reportedly screamed ‘Allahu Akbar’.
A large police operation is underway at Winterthur train station in Switzerland on Thursday morning. An area of approximately 100 meters is cordoned off with barrier tape. The new station underpass is also closed. In addition to numerous police vehicles, paramedics are also on site.
An eyewitness who works opposite the cordoned-off area told this newsroom that a middle-aged man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is greater) and stabbed four men with a knife. A school class was passing by the scene at the time, reports tagesanzeiger.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The area around the entrance to the main building housing the SBB travel agency is cordoned off. The cantonal police secured and photographed items there that are suspected of being related to the crime.
Another witness, a taxi driver, claimed a man was walking around in the area of the underpass and attacking people.
The attacks reportedly happened in a number of different locations. Three areas around the underpass have been cordoned off. Behind the cordon are suspected pieces of evidence marked with numbers.
