The latest surrounding Liverpool in the aftermath of Arne Slot’s sacking sees Jamie Carragher voice his concerns over player power, while a decision has been made on Joe Gomez’s future at Anfield
Liverpool find themselves in the extraordinary position of regrouping following the sacking of Arne Slot. The Reds had dismissed just five managers before Slot since the turn of the 21st century.
The post-mortem is now underway, with fans and pundits alike offering their thoughts on how Slot found himself out of work merely a year after clinching the Premier League title. Today’s Liverpool latest sees a former Red share his viewpoint on the situation. Meanwhile, a verdict has been reached regarding another star linked with an Anfield departure, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Reds icon Carragher was taken aback by Slot’s sacking and believes the blame for the entire saga rests with several parties. He told Sky Sports: “I was torn on Arne Slot, I must say, I would’ve backed any decision and I can see both sides of the argument but an elite football manager finds a way to fix Liverpool to make it better but he wasn’t helped with recruitment, have anyone of them done well?

“You could put that on the manager, does he need to get more out of them? Should them players have done more? Yes. Should the people above him give him a better squad? Yes. There’s a lot of people to point fingers at.” He added: “There is no doubt that he lost supporters, I think that was harsh on the back of what happened 12 months before. Supporter base has a huge influence, when you talk about player power, that can’t have helped with Salah. I’m not happy with that, I don’t ever want Liverpool Football Club to have player power to speak out about a manager who won the Premier League.
“What manager does it help when a star player comes out publicly criticising the manager, that shouldn’t happen no matter the situation. Maybe it’s forced the clubs’ hand. I don’t know what goes on in the dressing room, I didn’t like Mo Salah’s post, I didn’t think he should come out publicly.
“Who does get on with every manager? Players have lots of different managers but you don’t go out on social media and do it publicly or put clapping emojis when someones having a go at your own manager. That probably tells you what’s going on in the Liverpool dressing room right now.”
Meanwhile, according to The Athletic, Joe Gomez will be staying at Anfield to see out the remaining year of his deal, meaning his departure will come next summer rather than this one. The long-serving defender arrived at the Reds in 2015 but drew attention from AC Milan last summer and Newcastle United in 2024.
The centre-half nearly left on transfer deadline day last year but stayed at the club after a planned move for Marc Guehi, then at Crystal Palace, fell through. The adaptable 29 year old managed only six Premier League starts this season, though.
When questioned about his future at the campaign’s end, Gomez stated: “I don’t know is the honest answer. I’ve only got a year left on my contract, so I don’t know. Whatever’s meant to be will be, but I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club.”
The development will provide some comfort to Reds fans following confirmation that Ibrahima Konate will be leaving Liverpool this summer. The 27 year old centre-back will join Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in exiting Anfield after being unable to agree terms on a fresh contract. Konate was instrumental in Liverpool’s title triumph in 2024/2025, and also clinched two League Cups and the FA Cup during his tenure at Anfield. However, the incoming manager can look forward to a couple of encouraging developments.
Liverpool are set to welcome France Under-21 international Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes this summer, following his £60million transfer in January. Giovanni Leoni, whose debut season at Anfield was curtailed by an ACL injury, is also expected to play a significant role once he regains full fitness.
