One person said it sounded like ‘down town Brooklyn’ as armed police and emergency services flooded Market Street in the Lancashire market town of Whitworth following a reported attempted armed robbery
Armed officers swarmed a Post Office in Whitworth after a shop worker was threatened with a weapon.
A massive emergency services response was witnessed on Market Street following the incident this morning (June 2). Lancashire Police confirmed they were alerted to an attempted armed robbery at 10.18am.
A man allegedly stormed into the Post Office demanding cash before threatening a shop worker with a weapon. No arrests have been made and a manhunt is underway for the alleged suspect.
The suspect is described as being a white male, aged approximately in his 50s, of medium to large build, with a scarf around his neck and a woollen hat.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, or with footage from the area, is urged to contact police.
Commenting on a local Facebook page, one person said “armed police at post office” while another posted “sounds like down town Brooklyn around here sirens everywhere.”, reports Lancs Live.
Another said: “All the post office is taped off lots of police cars and vans as far as I know everyone is okay just shaken.”
A fourth wrote: “Awful incident. Hope staff and customers are all ok. Terrible thing to happen to hardworking people just trying to make a living and provide a service to the community. Disgusting.”
A Lancashire Police spokesperson told LancsLive: ” At 10:18am on Tuesday June 2 we were called to reports of an attempted armed robbery at a Post Office on Market Street, Whitworth.
“It was reported that a man entered the post office demanding money and threatening a shop worker with a weapon.
“The man is described as a white man, aged approximately in his 50s, of medium to large build, with a scarf around his neck and a woollen hat.
“If you witnessed this incident, have any CCTV/dashcam/doorbell footage, or any information that could help at all, please call 101 quoting log 417 of June 2.”
