Driver killed and two rushed to hospital after two-car crash as police swarm scene

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 50-year-old man, passed away shortly afterwards

One individual has tragically lost their life and two others are in a serious condition in hospital following a road accident in Dumfries and Galloway.

Police Scotland are seeking information regarding the incident, which occurred around 7.35pm on Saturday on the A709 Dumfries to Lockerbie road, near Lochfield, Lochmaben. The collision involved a black Vauxhall Vectra and a white Citroen Dispatch.

Emergency services were on the scene and three individuals were transported to hospital for treatment. Sadly, the driver of the Vauxhall, a 50-year-old man, passed away shortly afterwards. The occupants of the Citroen, a 67-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, remain in hospital in a serious condition.

The road was shut for approximately eight hours to facilitate inquiries and reopened around 3.30am on Sunday.

Sergeant Wayne Carnochan stated: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died at this time. Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything around this time to contact us.

“In addition, anyone with relevant dash-cam footage is asked to get in touch as this may be able to assist.”

Meanwhile, a man has tragically died after being struck by a vehicle and falling from a footbridge on the A27 in East Sussex.

Emergency services rushed to the road near the Dyke Road roundabouts, in Hove, at around 9:15am on Saturday. A 59-year-old local man died at the scene and his next of kin have been informed, Sussex Police said. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

The A27 was shut in both directions for several hours on Saturday, before later reopening. Sussex Police said in a statement: “Emergency services were called to the A27, near the Dyke Road roundabouts, at around 9.15am.

“A car was reported to have collided with a pedestrian, who is understood to have fallen from a footbridge passing over the carriageway. On attendance, a 59-year-old local man was sadly declared deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

“Enquiries are ongoing to understand exactly what has happened, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances at this time.”
