She’s gone all Taylor Swift
My sister has gone all Taylor Swift on me. She is getting married in October and has banned all ‘plus ones’.
She’s decreed that couples need to be married or engaged i.e. ‘no ring, no bring’. Singles will simply mingle…
I understand singer Taylor Swift and American footballer Travis Kelce are doing something similar for their July wedding but how dare my own sister be so grand?
I suspect she’s jealous because my new boyfriend is very wealthy. Unfortunately, he can’t move in with me until his divorce comes through, so I’m currently living alone. My sis is a hypocrite because when I married my ex-husband in 2015, I allowed her to bring her boyfriend of six months and never uttered a word when they split two weeks later. I bet she puts me on the sad singles table by the toilets.
I’m fuming.
JANE SAYS: It’s been suggested that Taylor and Travis aren’t having ‘plus ones’ at their celebrity wedding because they only want to be surrounded by people they know, and trust, and don’t want to risk strangers, or even paparazzi, sneaking in and taking up the spare seats. You can see their point when they’re vulnerable, and privacy is so important to them.
The fact is that your sister isn’t being ‘uppity’ or ‘grand’ she’s simply being realistic. For a start, weddings are very expensive.
Billionaire Taylor has plenty of dosh but why should your sister fork out on food and drink for people she doesn’t even know? How many of us have looked back at old family wedding photographs over the years and wondered ‘Who on earth are those strangers lurking at the back?’
It’s tempting to think ‘the more the merrier’ but there needs to be control. Your sister can impose any rules she likes. Her day, her way.
I suspect she’s been to a fair number of weddings in her time and knows exactly what works regarding the perfect guest list.
Don’t forget that this is her big moment and lot of energy, planning and money is going in to making it perfect.
I understand you’re miffed, but don’t fall out with your sister over this matter.
I very much doubt she bought in this rule to deliberately exclude your man specifically.
She’s planning an important event – I’m sure she’s got plenty of more pressing matters on her mind. This is not personal. When your boyfriend is finally divorced and you’re living together as a loving, committed couple then it will be a new beginning and different story.
Don’t look for a slight when I very much doubt if one is intended. You had your wedding, your way, and weren’t bothered by the ‘plus one’ rule even though she split with her ex soon after.
Is your new boyfriend even that bothered about going in the first place? I suggest you attend this family occasion surrounded by family and old friends and have a ball.
Rise above, offer your very best wishes, and shake it off…
