Horror at Electric Forest as a sanitation worker found a newborn baby’s body in a portable toilet during early-morning servicing on June 28, prompting an urgent police probe
A music festival weekend was plunged into horror after the body of a newborn baby was found inside a portable toilet. The gruesome discovery sparked an urgent police investigation and appeals for witnesses to come forward.
The grim finding was made during routine servicing of the toilets early on Sunday (June 28) morning. Michigan State Police in the US said a sanitation worker employed by the festival’s restroom vending company found the infant at around 7.50am while carrying out scheduled maintenance.
Investigators at the scene reportedly believe the baby may have been delivered inside the portable toilet itself. Preliminary reports indicate an umbilical cord and a placenta were also found, raising fears that the infant was born at the location before dying.
Police have described the baby as a “neonate”. This means the child was four weeks old or younger.
However, the exact age has not been confirmed and authorities have not released the baby’s biological sex, True Crime News reported. An official autopsy has now been completed, Michigan State Police confirmed, but investigators are still reviewing the findings.
The force said crucial details – including the cause of death and the precise timeline of when the baby died – have not yet been made public, according to News Channel 3 WWMT. Moreover, toxicology results and final autopsy data can take time to process, officers added.
At this stage, the death has not been classified as a homicide, according to MSP Lieutenant Pat Agema. However, police reportedly stressed that could change depending on the toxicology reports and final medical conclusions.
The incident happened at the camping area of Electric Forest, a multi-day music festival known for electronic music and jam bands, where tens of thousands of fans stay on-site while watching live sets across seven stages, Detroit Free Press reported. The festival is held in Rothbury, Michigan, and typically draws around 50,000 people each year.
Police said there have been no arrests and, at present, no suspects or active leads on the identity of the mother, a parent, or a legal guardian. Meanwhile, festival organisers issued a statement saying they were “heartbroken” and urged anyone with information to cooperate with investigators, the Independent reported.
On social media, organisers posted: “Forest Family, it causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you. Michigan State Police continues to investigate this tragic event if you can assist in any way.
“HQ is heartbroken and knows that our Forest Family is as well.” Michigan State Police are now appealing directly to festivalgoers who stayed in the camping areas or noticed anything unusual to come forward discreetly.
