A new survey suggests that consistent routines are helping Brits save hundreds of pounds each year
A survey of 2,000 adults found that 76% require consistent routines to help them stay on track. Daily tasks such as meal preparation (45%), household cleaning (44%), and exercise are all part of achieving certain goals.
In terms of finances, nine in 10 respondents agreed that having a routine is vital for managing their budget effectively.
Three-quarters of those with consistent money management habits, such as regularly checking bank balances and setting aside money on payday, have saved an average of £320 over the past 12 months as a result.
To help, many respondents turn to practical tools, including budgeting and banking apps. Meanwhile those looking to keep a closer eye on their household spending use devices such as a smart meter.y
More than two-thirds (65%) of households with a smart meter report that it has helped them track their energy usage and associated costs. Moreover, almost half (47%) claim that their smart meter has encouraged them to adopt habits that reduce energy consumption.
One such individual is Sarah Fitzgerald, a mother of two from Essex.
She said: “My routines are what help me stay in control of it all. I like to know what’s coming in and going out each month, so having simple ways to stay on top of my budget is important to me.”
She added that checking her smart meter display has become a regular part of her routine, helping her entire family develop better habits. “My kids are more aware of the energy they use now, and those small changes can make a real difference to our bills,” she said.
The research showed that habits have a positive impact on goals. In fact, according to the survey carried out by OnePoll, the power of daily habits appears to ring true for 70%, as they get quiet satisfaction from the small routines and rituals which shape their daily lives.
Gladiators star, Olympian and TV personality Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, also known as Nitro, believes consistency is key to staying on track.
He added: “I’ve always believed that success comes from doing the simple things consistently. Life can get pretty hectic, so routines help me stay focused and moving in the right direction.
“It’s the same with managing things like energy use at home – with a smart meter you can keep track of your usage and feel more in control of it.
“For me, it’s another example of how small daily habits and having the right information can make life feel more manageable.”
