North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have confirmed that they are currently dealing with a fire at a building on the site of Malton Hospital, which is run by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
A major blaze has been sparked at the site of Malton Hospital in North Yorkshire after reports of “explosions” being heard.
Crews from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are currently on the scene of the fire, which is located in a building on the site, which is run by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
According to reports, the incident is believed to have started at around 11:30am today (July 8). The fire service has confirmed that all people have been accounted for as they tackle the blaze.
Malton Town Council has also warned locals that “ash and debris falling from the sky” and people need to be “vigilant”.
Several images of the blaze so it is currently confirmed to a single building with flames engulfing the roof. Police have cordoned off an area of the hospital while fire crews deal with the situation.
Malton Councillor Lindsay Burr has spoken out about the incident and confirmed the incident occurred at the Springwood unit of the hospital, a that provides mental health services for older people.
She added that evacuated patients have been taken to Malton School, where they will continue to receive treatment.
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have confirmed the blaze sparked an evacuation and that all patients and staff are safe. No injures have also been reported, the Trust added.
Malton Urgent Treatment Centre was closed due to the incident with the Trust urging patients not to attend.
Reports from the local paper, the Gazette & Herald, say their reporter on the scene witnessed hearing several explosions that are believed to be caused by oxygen tanks.
In a statement, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “All patients and colleagues have been safely evacuated, and there are no reports of any injuries.
“We are working closely with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and other partner agencies to monitor the situation.”
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We’re currently responding to an incident involving a building on the Malton and Norton District Hospital site.
“A number of fire crews are on the scene. Hospital staff have confirmed all people are accounted for.
“Residents and anyone nearby may notice large amounts of smoke. As a precaution, please keep all doors and windows closed.
“Please avoid the area at this time to allow emergency services access.”
