More than 50 Post Office branches across the UK are set to permanently close by early October, following Morrisons’ decision to shut down loss-making Morrisons Daily convenience stores acquired in its £190m McColl’s rescue deal

Over 50 Post Office branches are set to close as Morrisons axes struggling convenience stores nationwide.

Communities right across England, Scotland and Wales are bracing for the loss of vital postal services as the retail giant pushes ahead with plans to shut around 100 Morrisons Daily outlets.

A minimum of 52 Post Office branches are expected to cease operations by early October, based on analysis of Post Office consultation papers by Better Retailing.

The majority of impacted branches are located in southern England, though closures are also scheduled for Wales, Scotland and northern England.

The Post Office is believed to be seeking alternative retailers that could accommodate services in the communities hit by closures, as reported by creatorzine. com.

Morrisons claimed the outlets had been loss-making for years and that matters had deteriorated further due to substantial cost rises tied to government policy changes.

The retailer had previously branded the decision and resulting redundancies as a “tough but necessary decision”.

The convenience stores in question were purchased as part of Morrisons’ £190m rescue package for McColl’s in 2022.

The supermarket chain is in talks with staff members affected and has stated it would seek to provide employees with alternative positions within the company wherever feasible.

Several MPs have reportedly begun discussions with Morrisons and the Post Office in a bid to safeguard access to local services.

According to Better Retailing, the closure of Morrisons Daily outlets and other recent shop shutdowns could bring the Post Office network dangerously close to dropping below the Government’s requirement to maintain a minimum of 11,500 locations.
