A couple who ordered Dover sole and calamari in what was believed to have been a £115 ‘dine and dash’ incident in Penarth have now settled the previously-outstanding bill after CCTV footage was shared on social media.

Management at the upmarket restaurant El Puerto at the Old Custom House said it was “hugely disappointing” when they discovered that a £115.60 bill had been left unpaid on the evening of June 29.

According to the receipt, two people ordered an all-day set menu for £32, a Dover sole meal for £52.10, calamari for £9.50, and eight Coca-Colas for £22.

Business owner Tanny Martinez said previously: “It’s incredibly frustrating when the hard work and dedication that goes into creating great experiences for our customers is not respected.

“The impact goes beyond the financial loss. Situations like this can also have a real effect on the team’s morale and wellbeing – especially when so much care and effort goes into every service.”

The restaurant posted on Facebook asking for the couple seen in CCTV pictures to get in touch so the matter could be resolved.

Speaking on behalf of the restaurant, Charley Backstedt-Calvert told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast: “Ultimately the restaurant want the bill paid.

“The best resolution that can happen from this is having that bill paid.

“Putting it on social media you’re going direct to the source and there’s a good chance people will come forward from that.”

El Puerto confirmed to Wales Online on Tuesday the matter has now been resolved and the bill has been paid.

The matter was reported to South Wales Police but no further action will be taken because the bill has now been settled after the diner made contact with the restaurant.
