Police called in the Hazmat response team to a street in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, after two people had suffered facial injuries while sleeping rough in a suspected acid attack
A man and a woman have been rushed to hospital after being victims of an alleged acid attack on a street in Scarborough overnight (July 15).
Emergency services rushed to the scene after two people were left two people needing hospital treatment as major emergency response was launched. Reports were made of an irritant being thrown at two people sleeping rough around Ramshill Road.
Police, ambulance crews and firefighters attended the scene shortly after 2.30am, with a HAZMAT response also being called to the scene.. Road such as Ramshill Road and Northway had to be closed while emergency services worked at the scene.
North Yorkshire Police has confirmed a man and a woman suffered facial injuries with an irritant being used. Police are yet to reveal the substance that was used. The two victims are believed to have suffered facial injuries that are not believed to be serious.
A woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody while police continue to make enquiries, reports YorkshireLive. Officers are also working to identify any other suspects that are believed to have been involved in the incident.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police in Scarborough are investigating after a man and a woman who were sleeping rough in the Ramshill Road area, had what is believed to be an irritant thrown at them.
“It happened at around 2.30am in the early hours of Wednesday 15 July. The victims were taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries that are not believed to be serious.
“One woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody at this time. An extensive investigation is ongoing to trace any other suspects believed to be involved. All three emergency services were involved in the incident which led to two areas of the town, Ramshill Road and Northway, being cordoned off and road closures put in place.
“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist the investigation, is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.
