Bedfordshire Police said officers were called to reports of a blast at an industrial unit on Brunel Road in Bedford, where one man died at the scene and three others have been taken to hospital to receive medical treatment.
A man has tragically lost his life and three others have been rushed to hospital following a “suspected explosion” at an industrial estate. Bedfordshire Police reported that they were called to the scene of the blast at an industrial unit on Brunel Road in Bedford.
A local resident, who was nearby when the incident occurred, shared on social media that “it sounded like a bomb going off”. Another post responding to the police update stated: “Did sound like an explosion of some sort, followed by the sound of lots of debris falling”.
The force confirmed that officers arrived at approximately 3:50pm. “One man died at the scene and three others have been taken to hospital to receive medical treatment,” read a statement from the police.
Officers are expected to remain at the location until the investigation is transferred to the Health and Safety Executive in due course, reports the Mirror.
The public has been urged to avoid speculation about the incident on social media, as a mark of respect for the family and friends of those affected.
An initial safety cordon that had been established has since been lifted, and all roads surrounding the incident have now been reopened, according to the police.
