Devon and Cornwall Police have given an update on the victims of a terrible tragedy at Fistral beach last night were dad and daughter as their family are hoping to retrieve a handbag that was reportedly taken into the water
The two victims of the tragedy at Fistral beach in Newquay have been confirmed as dad and daughter, following an update by police.
Emergency services, including the police, coastguard and ambulance, were spotted at the beach late last night (July 26) at around 9.45pm on Sunday, July 26, after reports that two people had been recovered from the water.
Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s, both from Doncaster, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Now the family of the victims, who have not been named, are hoping to find a handbag that was reportedly carried into the water.
The feamle victim is understood to have entered the water carrying a orange or peach in coloured handbag, with a shoulder strap, reports Cornwall Live.
The leather-style bag, which is around 30cm by 30cm in size, is thought to contain a number of personal items of great sentimental value that he family would like returned.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing as many as nine emergency vehicles at the beach, while a rescue helicopter hovered overhead for a considerable period.
A spokesperson for the coastguard said: “HM Coastguard has been responding to an incident in the South Fistral area, Newquay, overnight. First informed at around 9.30pm (26 July), Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes, lifeboats from Newquay RNLI and an HM Coastguard helicopter were sent to the scene, alongside other emergency services.”
Speaking earlier, a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ” Police were called by the South Western Ambulance Service at around 9.45pm on Sunday 26 July following reports that two people had been recovered from the water at Fistral Beach, Newquay.
“Emergency services attended and a cordon was put in place, which has since been removed. Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Their families have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time. A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.”
