Jason Mulhern, 57, was booted off the plane after two hours following the sweary tirade, which pushed the flight outside of safe flying hours meaning passengers had to seek accomodation
A man whose sweary tirade led to a UK flight being cancelled and hundreds of holidays being disrupted has received a suspended prison sentence.
Jason Mulhern, 57, was set to take a Jet2 flight from Manchester Airport to Dalaman in Turkey back in June 2024 along with his wife. The pair reportedly became engaged in furious row with another passenger, with Mulhern’s wife making a comment about their accent, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Manchester Crown Court heard how the enraged pair were warned by cabin crew that they would not be allowed to buy alcoholic drinks on board, a decision which was followed by Mulhern growing “aggressive, defensive and angry” that he was not able to “booze up”, calling a female air hostess a f***ing Nazi and a c***.”
Mulhern, who also reportedly called multiple more cabin crew members ‘Nazis’, was told he was to be removed from the plane along with his partner, a decision which was greeted with applause by many on the plane.
The angry tirade and the subsequent ejection meant that the flight had already been delayed by two hours. Unfortunately, this pushed the timings outside of safe flying hours, meaning around passengers had to leave the plane, most requiring accomodation and meals
Judge Elizabeth Nicholls slammed Mulhern’s behaviour, saying “Nobody was forcing you to drink. There was no need to drink, that was a choice you took,” she said.
“Your conduct caused the plane to be delayed again. Your conduct alone was responsible for the loss of that day’s flight. A flight that everyone’s holidays had to be deferred, everyone had to make alternative arrangements, everyone had to be put up in hotels.”
She added: “You ruined or potentially ruined every other person’s holiday who boarded that flight. That was the impact of your single behaviour.
“What you did was quite frankly despicable. It caused chaos and distress to a large number of people. I hope you now understand the consequences of your behaviour.”
Mulhern, was sentenced to eight months in prison, which has been suspended for 18 months.
He will also be required to do five days of rehabilitation activity requirements, an alcohol abstinence order lasting 120 days and 300 hours of unpaid work.
He was ordered to pay £500 in court costs.
The court also heard that Mulhern has been given a lifelong ban from travelling with Jet2, who according to the prosecution are looking to file a civil claim to the amount of £44,710, which includes costs of hotels and delays.
