The basketball world has been rocked by the sudden death of Russian basketball coach Eduard Sandler, who has tragically been killed in a jet ski incident, according to local media reports
A top basketball coach in Russia has tragically died after reportedly being injured in a horror accident while riding a jet ski. Eduard Sandler, who coaches PBC Dynamo Vladivostok, passed away at the age of 44, his club has since confirmed in a statement.
According to Russian media reports, Sandler allegedly lost control of his jet ski in the harbour near the Burny business centre.
He reportedly suffered serve injuries after hitting against some rocks. Despite quick calls to emergency services, Sandler was pronounced dead before the ambulance arrived at the scene.
The Investigative Committee of Russia for Primorsky Krai said investigators and forensic experts worked at the scene of the crash and an investigation is underway.
Sandler had been the head coach of Dynamo Vladivostok since 2023. He led to the team winning gold medals in the Super League championship in 2024.
Sandler was also head coach of the Russian national basketball team’s under 20s side since 2024.
His club PBC Dynamo Vladivostok has issued a statement expressing grief over the sudden “irreplaceable loss” of their coach.
The statement read: “Eduard Mikhailovich Sandler has passed away. … This is an irreplaceable loss for the entire sports community of the Primorsky Krai region and for Russian basketball.
“Eduard Mikhailovich dedicated his life to the development of the sport, the nurturing of players, and the building of a strong system.
“Thanks to his energy, character, and commitment, Dynamo achieved great success and significant victories. All who knew Eduard Mikhailovich will remember him as a man who loved basketball and the Primorsky Krai region with all his heart.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, friends, colleagues, and all who share this profound loss.”
