A supernatural influencer has died in a horror car crash just months after smashing a religious statue in a viral video.

Ghost hunter, Jiang Xiaorou, was a passenger in a rideshare vehicle when it was involved in a serious crash. Doctors fought to save her life for nearly a month before community leaders announced she had passed away on 10 August.

The tragic accident comes months after Jiang, who built up a following of 1.3 million online fans, destroyed a statue of Guanyin, the Chinese Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. In the bold “anti-superstition” challenge, Jiang, 24, swung the hammer hard on the figure and taunted fans to see if a curse would strike.

The shocking clip – which was shared in August 2025 – spread fast and drew angry comments at the time. Critics called it deeply disrespectful while many of her followers cheered the fearless act. The video has since flooded social media following the crash which happened while Jiang was heading to Guangzhou from Guangxi, in southern China on 15 July.

Jiang, from a rural village in Hunan province, south-central China, suffered massive trauma, heavy blood loss, organ failure and severe brain damage. Medics rushed Jiang into intensive care at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital on a ventilator.

She remained in a coma as doctors fought to save her life for nearly a month until community leaders from her hometown officially verified her death on 10 August. The influencer built a huge following with content about ghost hunts, abandoned ruins and taboo tests. She specialised in late-night explorations and risky stunts that pushed folk beliefs.

Some online users have linked the fatal crash to the smashed statue and called it karma. Her family issued a short statement yesterday (11 Aug) asking people to stop wildly guessing about her online content and to let her rest quietly.

An investigation into the fatal road accident is ongoing.

The development comes after an influencer was shot dead while livestreaming outside a KFC. César Gastélum was shot in the head by two motorcycling hitmen while filming content in front of a fast food restaurant last week Tuesday.

Viewers watched on as the horror unfolded in real time on the streaming platform Kick under the victim’s alias Compasexor. The Mexican social media star, who had 600,000 TikTok fans and 123,000 Instagram followers, dropped to the ground and had no vital signs when paramedics arrived on the scene.

Full name César Daniel Nolasco Gastélum, the victim specialised in comedy sketches, northern culture parodies and live chats. The killing comes amid ongoing bloody turf wars between rival organised crime groups in the city. It echoes last year’s livestream murder of beauty influencer Valeria Márquez in Jalisco.
