Former Fox news anchor Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 48, has pleaded guilty to murdering her mum Anita Avers, 80, after police found her stabbed to death in bed in a Halloween bloodbath
A former news anchor stabbed her mum to death in her own bed in a horror Halloween bloodbath – before claiming she did it “to save myself”, police allege.
Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 48, has now pleaded guilty to first-degree murder over the killing of her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers, on October 31, 2025, inside the home they shares in Wichita, Kansas. She is due to be sentenced on October 5 of this year and faces life in prison, with parole eligibility after 25 years.
Disturbing new details about the scene emerged in a probable cause affidavit. Officers found Avers unresponsive in bed wearing only underwear and a bra, lying under blankets in a massive pool of blood, with deep stab wounds to her face, head, neck, torso and arms.
In a chilling detail, four bloodied kitchen knives and a bloodied cheese grater were allegedly left on a pillow next to her head. “All the utensils had blood on them”, court documents said. Avers was rushed to hospital but later died from her injuries.
The former Fox News anchor herself called 911 after the attack and allegedly told a dispatcher that “her mother tried to kill her, so she stabbed her in return”, according to the affidavit, the Sun reported. Cops reportedly arrived to find Mock outside the home holding a towel over her bloodied hands.
Detectives say Mock later claimed she had gone into her mother’s bedroom to discuss an upcoming TV job interview when she found Avers “sharpening knives”. Mock alleged her mum “came after her with a knife and fought her” before she grabbed a knife herself and “got on top of her”.
Investigators also reportedly described a trail of blood droplets through the house. They reportedly found a bloody butcher knife alongside Mock’s phone on a living room coffee table, while the victim’s blood-soaked phone had been dumped in the kitchen sink.
The affidavit says Mock made shocking claims about her mother during interviews. She allegedly insisted Avers was “the devil” and “spewing venom”, and claimed she stabbed her mum because she believed she was in danger.
Mock’s stepfather, Barry, told police she had suffered worsening mental health after being laid off from her broadcasting career. He said Avers had encouraged her daughter to seek help and that Mock experienced “bouts of delusions mixed with periods of depression”.
Mock had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder, authorities said. Mock was initially ordered to undergo an evaluation to determine whether she was competent to stand trial, and the case was paused in January 2026 after a judge ruled her incompetent and committed her to Larned State Hospital.
A judge ruled in July that she was competent. She has since waived her right to a trial and pleaded guilty.
Mock previously worked for Fox 2 in St Louis, Missouri, becoming a familiar face on local TV after landing the job in 2011, the Daily Star previously reported. She was first held in Sedgwick County Jail on a $1million bond (about £790,000).
