Gordon Brown has warned Donald Trump he has lost the American public and is facing a “wake up call” at the midterm elections.
The former PM criticised the US President, and that Americans were increasingly on the side of international cooperation rather than an “America first and only” approach.
Speaking on The Rest Is Money podcast, Mr Brown also called for a new “coalition of the responsible”, bringing together Britain, Canada, Australia, France and Japan.
He said: “I would say to him, American public opinion is not with you anymore. I mean, if you look at the results that we’ve got from the opinion polls we’ve done, American people want to cooperate.
“They want America to be engaged in persuasion and not coercion. America, which used to act multilaterally in a unipolar world, has got to be persuaded to act multilaterally in a multi-polar world.
“And the public of America are with us on this. And I think the midterm elections may be a wake up call that the Trump view of the world that it’s America first and only is something that is not actually held by the American people. And I would probably try and tell him that.”
Mr Brown also hit out at the dangers of populism across the world, pointing to Trump in America and Nigel Farage in the UK.
The Labour big beast argued they lacked real solutions, and thrived when people felt they had no stake in their communities.
He said: “What happens is that a void is created, a vacuum. And so in our communities, where there’s no strong community organizations or a weak sense of community, there’s a vacuum created and a nationalist politician can just fill the void and move in and say, ‘I speak for you. Nobody else does. I can stand up for your interests. Nobody else is.’
“And of course, that’s the secret for ADF in Germany, for Le Pen, in France, for Orban, in Hungary, for Trump in America, and to some extent for Reform in the United Kingdom.”
It comes as President Trump Donald Trump has attacked the growing backlash towards data centres across the US and branded communities who pushed back as “backwards and poor”.
It comes as expert say the Republicans could be facing “historic losses” in the upcoming Midterms.
Some Republican lawmakers facing reelection are so worried they are even seeking to distance themselves from Trump over fears his unpopularity will negatively impact their chances.
