Prince Harry flew to Scotland after hearing Queen Elizabeth’s health had worsened on September 8, 2022, and he arrived at Balmoral only to find his grandmother had already passed away
Prince Harry and Meghan, who quit royal life six years ago, have moved back to the UK reportedly living in the Cotswolds. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s two children Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, will start a British school later this month.
It is believed that the family will live in a private, non-royal residence and will keep their mansion in Montecito, California. However, they are not expected to return to life as working royals.
Should they be living in the Cotswolds, they will have several royal neighbours including Princess Anne. Harry’s aunt lives in Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire along with her daughter and son-in-law Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall.
While Anne is said to have made a “pointed remark” about the Sussexes as they left the UK back in 2020, she did have a touching moment with Harry two years later.
The Duke of Sussex flew to Scotland in September 2022 after the news his beloved grandmother Queen Elizabeth II was deteriorating.
Royal author Robert Jobson claims that Charles “banned” Meghan from making the journey to Scotland, reports the Express.
Harry claimed his father subsequently told him “no wives” were making the trip to see the Queen, with Kate Middleton staying in London with her children.
By the time his plane landed, news had already emerged of the Queen’s death. In his memoir Spare, Harry wrote: “When the plane started to descend I saw that my phone lit up. It was a message from Meg: ‘Call me when you get this’.
“I looked at the BBC website. My grandmother had died. My father was King.”
Upon Harry’s arrival at Balmoral, he was greeted by his aunt, the Princess Royal, who had been staying with the 96-year-old monarch at the Scottish estate. Harry recounted the heartbreaking question Anne posed when he arrived and had missed the late Queen’s passing.
He added: “She asked if I wanted to see Granny. [I answered,] ‘Yes, I do.'” Harry revealed his grandmother’s bedroom felt “unfamiliar” during his visit to see her.
He characterised the experience as “difficult” but admitted he “kept on thinking how I’d regretted not seeing my mother at the end,” according to US magazine.
Harry expressed being “in awe” of his grandmother for continuing her duties right until her final days. Her Majesty received then Prime Minister Liz Truss merely 48 hours before her passing.
Truss took over from Boris Johnson as Prime Minister on September 6. However, she stepped down just 49 days later – making her tenure the briefest of any PM.
