Vladimir Putin has a terrifying array of nuclear-capable missiles, flesh-incinerating “vacuum” bombs and radioactive tsunami torpedoes at his disposal. These prized “doomsday” superweapons not only pose a threat of mass destruction, but they also serve as a chilling propaganda tool designed to instil fear into the West.
This week a train carrying Boris Johnson narrowly escaped a Russian drone strike by mere minutes. Tensions have escalated between London and Moscow in recent weeks after the UK provided Ukraine with the coveted blueprints for creating powerful Storm Shadow missiles to target Russian interests.
Here’s a look at what the Kremlin despot Putin could unleash at the UK, should he choose all-out war.
Poseidon torpedo
One of the weapons in Putin’s arsenal is the infamous Poseidon torpedo, believed to be capable of triggering radioactive tsunami waves.
Last October, Moscow announced it had tested the nuclear-capable sea rocket, with the Russian leader boasting of its invincibility.
The feared weapon is said to be capable of carrying atomic warheads that could render entire coastlines uninhabitable through radioactive underwater explosions.
‘Flying Chernobyl’
The Burevestnik missile is an experimental low-flying cruise missile is both nuclear-capable and nuclear-powered.
Defence experts have dubbed it the “Flying Chernobyl”, warning that Putin’s reckless super-weapon risks spreading deadly radioactive fallout across his own territory.
The Kremlin has long praised the “invincible” beast, which reportedly boasts an unlimited range and top speeds of nearly 1,000km per hour – meaning it could reach Britain in two-and-a-half hours.
Toxic chemicals
Throughout the war, Moscow has been accused of using chloropicrin, a toxic choking agent, against Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline – a clear violation of international law.
The chilling chemical capabilities of Russia have already been demonstrated with the tragic death of British mother Dawn Sturgess, who was fatally exposed to Novichok, a potent nerve agent.
This lethal substance found its way onto UK soil following a failed Russian assassination attempt on former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in 2018.
Vacuum bomb
Russia has also reportedly deployed devastating thermobaric weapons – also known as vacuum bombs – in Ukraine.
These weapons release an initial cloud of explosive gas, which is then ignited by a second explosion that results in a massive blast capable of vaporising humans.
Civilians caught in the initial gas leak could even begin to suffocate as the fuel saturates the air.
Satan 2
Another feared weapon in Russia’s arsenal is the so-called Satan 2 missile.
Officially known as the RS-28 Sarmat, this brutal intercontinental ballistic missile is considered Putin’s prized bomb.
With a staggering speed of Mach 20, it could reach the UK in just five minutes, Kremlin insiders claim.
The Russian leader has also ramped up the number of nuclear warheads deployed to a nine-year high, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) warned last week.
