Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna has opened up on her relationship with the Formula 1 icon and detailed the attention her husband received from fans
Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher regular received underwear from fans, according to his wife, Corinna.
It marks a rare insight into the couple’s relationship after a devastating skiing accident in 2013 left Schumacher requiring round-the-clock care and out of the public eye. Corinna has spoke out for a new documentary, Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend. She cut an emotional figure reflecting on her relationship with the 57-year-old, opening up on fond memories.
The Ferrari legend won seven world championships during his race career but apparently drew attention for more than his performance on the track. Schumacher was inundated with underwear, with one person sending mail so often that their name became commonplace in their household.

“He received a lot of it,” she said. “Also from a young girl who always sent underwear along with his mail. Her name was Jutta. At some point, ‘Come on, Jutta,’ became his standard phrase.”
Corinna also admitted she can find herself crying in her car when she hears Paul Abdul’s song Rush Rush. The 1991 song holds a special place in her heart.
“That was our song back then,” she said, recalling the early days of her relationship with Schumacher. “When I hear it today and I’m in the car, I cry to myself.”
Despite Schumacher perhaps being a more eligible bachelor than most, Corinna’s mother wasn’t too pleased when her daughter started seeing the racing driver. “My mother was completely against it,” she said.
“Michael was always at the go-kart track and was always pushing others out. My mother always said: “Look at Schumacher! They have a go-kart track at home, they throw out anyone who does anything wrong, and now he’s throwing people out!
“My mother would say: ‘Schumacher, Schumacher.'”
Schumacher has not been seen in public since the skiing accident in December 2013. The extent of his condition has been closely guarded by his family and a tiny circle of trusted friends.
He was placed in a medically induced coma and spent eight months in hospital before being moved to a private rehabilitation set-up at the family home. In the 2021 documentary Schumacher, Corinna provided some insight into her husband’s condition
“Michael is here,” she said Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find. He still shows me how strong he is every day.
“We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond.
“And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.
“‘Private is private’, as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
