Gary Lineker admits he cried at Alan Shearer and Ian Wright’s support after MOTD axe

Gary Lineker has admitted he cried when learning of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright‘s support after his BBC suspension.

The pundits stuck by their Match of the Day colleague and close friend Lineker when he was axed by the Beeb earlier this month for criticising the government’s language in relation to their asylum policy. It was claimed at the time he was moved by their loyalty to him.

And Lineker has now opened up on the emotional moment. Speaking on the Rest is Politics podcast, via The Times, he said: “It was funny.

“I was in a restaurant, and then in the back of the car, and firstly when Ian Wright pulled out of the show, and then when Alan did as well, Alan Shearer, and I must admit I had a tear in my eye.

“It was like ‘my goodness, I think they’re doing it more for the cause’, but to get that kind of team spirit, that kind of camaraderie and togetherness, I mean, it just moved me. It was beautiful.”

Lineker has since returned to hosting duties but is yet to work his usual slot on the MOTD highlights show on Saturday nights as he anchored their FA Cup coverage on the weekend of his return – that was until he fell ill and had to be replaced by Alex Scott.

Mark Chapman, who usually presents Sunday’s MOTD2, took his regular place, joking at the start of the programme: “Before you ask, I was booked for this weeks ago.”

Lineker, Shearer and Wright are set to finally be reunited on our TV screens this weekend once the international break has concluded.
