OAP gave boys given sweets ‘laced with sedatives’ at summer time camp to abuse them

A pensioner has admitted sexual offences against two boys, aged nine and 10, after kids fell ill at a summer camp in Leicestershire. Jon Ruben, 76 from Wayte Court in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, appeared before Leicester Magistrates’ Court today (November 14).

He pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges. However, he denied one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

Leicester Crown Court was told Ruben laced sweets with tranquilising drugs and attacked two children after asking youngsters to play “a sweet game”.

Ruben, of Wayte Court, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, admitted sexual assault of a child under 13, assault of a child under 13 by penetration, eight counts of child cruelty, three counts of making indecent images of children and four drugs charges.

But he denied a charge of assault by penetration which prosecutors have been given two weeks to consider if they will proceed with.

The charges relate to incidents involving three boys at the summer camp between July 25 and July 29 this year.

Leicestershire Police were alerted about children falling sick at Stathern Lodge in Canal Lane, Stathern. Eight boys aged between eight and 11, along with one adult, were rushed to hospital as a precautionary measure but were later discharged, according to the police.

Ruben was arrested at a local pub under suspicion of administering poison or a noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

Police stated at the time that the “owners and operators of Stathern Lodge are independent from those people who use or hire the lodge and are not connected to the incident”.

Stathern Lodge is a renovated farmhouse equipped with a sports hall and catering facilities.

The East Midlands special operations unit’s major incident team is leading the investigation.

Leicestershire Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after the incident.

Local residents reported seeing upset parents outside the village hall in nearby Plungar, which served as a triage centre for the children.
