Harry Potter TV present’s main star Dominic McLaughlin fronts new Stranger Things-inspired sequence as BBC drops first look trailer

The star of HBO‘s hotly-anticipated Harry Potter TV show Dominic McLaughlin is set to take centre stage this month in a new Stranger Things-inspired TV show.

Gifted, which will air on CBBC from November 24, is centred around a group of teens who all have special gifts – from mind-reading to invisibility to telekinesis.

Set and filmed in Scotland, the action-adventure drama follows the gifted teenagers as they bring their powers together to save themselves and their loved ones from a powerful organisation – the Bodkin.

The show has echoes of not only Stranger Things, but Harry Potter too and the teens all attend a special school in a bid to hone and better control their unique gifts.

Gifted is based on the novel series of the same name by Marilyn Kaye and will introduce TV fans to a number of young, up-and-coming Scottish actors.

This, of course, includes Dominic McLaughlin, 11, who has also been cast as Harry Potter in the first television of JK Rowling‘s hit novels.

Dominic is notably the same age Daniel Radcliffe was when he was first cast for the Harry Potter films, which were released between 2001 and 2011.

The show is a co-production between the Glasgow-based production company Black Camel Pictures and Media Valley, who are based in Paris.

It is scheduled for international distribution in early 2026, giving young people a chance to get to know Dominic McLaughlin ahead of his starring role in the Harry Potter show, which is expected to be released in 2027.

Arabella Page Croft, Executive Producer at Black Camel Pictures, said: ‘Scottish kids clearly have talent and they want to act!

‘We are excited to produce this show for CBBC and bring these young talents and our beautiful capital city to a young audience globally.’

NDR, who commissioned Gifted, praised the series for being a story with many appealing elements for young audiences.

Ole Kampovski Head of Children and Youth Department at NDR, added: ‘Gifted is a great story full of friendship, mystery and adventures. It is a program, I am sure, our audience will enjoy a lot.

‘NDR is very happy to produce such a marvellous show together with our great partners Black Camel Pictures, Media Valley, CBBC and OneGate.’

News of the upcoming series comes after it was announced that the Harry Potter TV show could feature legendary British actor Bill Nighy.

The series is ‘set to cast’ actor Bill Nighy to star in the new episodes after the actor, 75, was secretly approached by bosses working on the HBO series, which went into production in August.

It’s understood that Bill has taken part in screen tests to play a Hogwarts potions master role.

The news comes after the Love Actually star agreed to voice a character for the new Harry Potter audio series.

An insider said: ‘It has been very “hush-hush”, but Bill was thrilled to take part in screen tests for the role last month.’

They continued to The Sun: ‘He wants it, the Potter production team want it, and now it’s a waiting game until contracts are signed. It will be a real coup to have Bill join a stellar cast.’

Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Bill for comment.

Previously sharing his excitement at landing a role in the new audio project, Bill said: ‘I was pleased to be asked to play the professor after having already played a minister for magic.

‘I’m always grateful when asked to play academics, having not been further educated myself.’
