Shoppers blast ‘dishonest’ Cadbury as they slash measurement of goodies however hold value

Shrinkflation has been blasted for making Christmas ‘even more unaffordable’ with chocolate lovers paying the same price but getting 10% less confectionary in popular selection pouches

Cadbury have been told to ‘just be honest’ after they sneakily slashed the amount of chocolate in their selection pouches – but kept the price the same. Packs of Heroes, Roses and Twirls have ten per cent less chocolate in them than previously, but you’ll get no change from a fiver for them.

The £5 pouches were stealthily slashed in size from 300g to 270g earlier this year with no announcement, and no change in the price tag. For many shoppers, it’s just not the kind of trimming they want to see at Christmas.

Shoppers have blasted the latest example of shrinkflation, where a product is reduced in size but the price stays the same – meaning customers are effectively paying more. In the case of the Cadbury favourites, this could mean two or three chocolates less per pack – not a good outcome when sharing with the rest of the family.

One disgruntled customer trying to stretch their budget at a supermarket in London told The Sun : “I don’t understand why they can’t at least be honest. It’s going to make Christmas even more unaffordable.”

Senior editor at Which? Reena Sewraz said: “Households are already under immense financial pressure with food bills inching up. Shops must be upfront about prices so it’s easy to see what the best value is.”

Earlier this year, a four-pack of Twirls was reduced to three despite no change in the price, with Cadbury owners Mondelez blaming the move on the rising cost of cocoa.

A spokesman for Cadbury said: “Any changes are a last resort. As a result of this difficult environment, we have had to slightly reduce the weight of our Cadbury Roses, Heroes and Twirl Pouches.”

Cadbury recently divided shoppers after replacing the chocolate Eclair in their Heroes tubs with Flakes. While some welcomed the move, others were firmly on Team Eclair.

One frustrated fan lamented on social media platform X: “Of course they are removing one of the best ones! (Eclairs) Why replace them with flakes? There are already Twirls in the tub; they are basically Flakes!”.

Another passionate Eclair supporter proclaimed: “There is nothing like a Cadbury’s chocolate Eclair. On my deathbed, I will roar for them even if I have no teeth!”

Yet there were compelling points from the opposing camp, with numerous chocoholics delighted to bid farewell to what they branded a “jaw breaker of a sweet” and “the dentist’s choice”.
