Missing canine makes itself at residence at hearth station after struggling horrific accidents
Cookie Marie became a staple of the firefighters at the station, but a run-in requiring surgery revealed that she used to live just miles away and had been missing for months
A missing dog has been found months after going missing after showing up at a fire station just miles away. The shock revelation came after the pup suffered a horrific injury and required surgery.
The dog had randomly shown up at a fire station in the US state of Texas back in September. With seemingly no information available about the mutt, the station’s workers took here in as she made herself at home straight away.
But unbeknownst to the crew, the dog had been missing for several months, and was only identified when doctors revealed they could not treat her until they obtained consent from the owner. Since then, the dog has been treated, and is now in full ownership of the fire station workers.
According to The Dodo, the dog first showed up and soon made herself at home, lying down after glancing around the station as if she had known the area. Seemingly confused, the Montgomery County Emergency Service rescue service stepped in and fed and watered the dog, whilst trying to figure out where she came from.
With no collar, officers initially thought she was a stray, but with no stray-like behaviour, it became a question where the dog had come from. However, despite their thoughts she would wonder off once again, the dog did nothing of the sort — and with no owners coming forward to claim her, the station took her in — naming her Cookie Marie.
Over time, Cookie Marie became a staple of the fire station’s day-to-day chores, according to Raymond Flannelly from the fire station. “[There are] two female paramedics on one of the shifts and … in the morning when they get off, she walks one to their car; they load up and they pull out, and then she comes and waits for the other one.”
Initially Flannelly had called for the dog to be moved away, but the station’s workers had grown so accustomed to Cookie Marie they wanted her to stay. He eventually relented, but one day the pup took a turn for the worse — with the station springing into action to look after her health.
She was taken to a nearby vet after showing up limping and visibly distressed. An x-ray showed that she had suffered a fracture to her leg after being injured in a suspected incident with a car and needed to go under the knife.
But things took a major turn when a microchip revealed that Cookie Marie actually belonged to a family who lived just six miles away and had been missing for several months. The fire crew were dealt another crushing blow when the vet revealed they would not be able to carry out the operation until they got the owner’s consent.
After days of struggling to get in touch, Cookie Marie’s original owners replied and agreed for the surgery to go ahead, before signing over ownership to the station’s admin officer. She officially went under the knife earlier this week, according to the station.
Now, Cookie Marie is back at the station where she is said to be recovering well, albeit unhappy at being unable to walk along the fire engines as they get to work. However, she is in good hands, as crew members sit with her every day — making sure she remains part of the team.
