The death toll from the Bondi Beach massacre has risen to 16 overnight, and includes a child.

The NSW Health Minister Ryan Park confirmed the new toll during a media appearance on the Today show on Monday morning.

The child passed away at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick. Four patients were transferred to the children’s hospital, Park said.

A local rabbi, an Israeli man and French citizen are also among the dead.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified; however, police believe their ages range between 10 and 87.

Forty people remain in hospital in various conditions.

Five people remain in a critical condition with the others remaining in a serious and stable condition.

Two injured police officers remain in a serious but stable condition.

Park described the injuries as “catastrophic”.

‘Gunshot injuries, they are extensive and explosive by nature. They do incredible damage. Head injuries, upper torso injuries, this has (been a) shocking incident,’ he said

One of the gunmen, 50, was shot by police and died at the scene.

The other gunman – 24-year-old old Naveed Akram – suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.

Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin told CNN that a friend had ‘lost his 12-year-old daughter, who succumbed to her wounds in hospital’.

‘I know everyone who was there (at the Bondi Hannukkah celebration). That’s an event where I attend with my family every single year,’ he said.

Police remain at Bondi Beach on Monday morning with Campbell Parade still closed.

King Frederick of Denmark and his Australian-born wife Queen Mary have sent their condolences to the Australian people and the Jewish community.

‘We and the people of Denmark are profoundly saddened by the tragic news of the terror attack at Bondi Beach today,’ a statement read.

‘We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to all those affected, their loved ones, the people of Australia and the Jewish community.’

Rabbi Eli Schlanger has tragically been confirmed as one of the victims of the Bondi Beach terror attack, which has left the community in shock and mourning.

The devastating news was shared by his first cousin, Rabbi Zalman Lewis, who took to social media to announce the heartbreaking loss.

In a post, Rabbi Lewis wrote: ‘My dear cousin, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was murdered in today’s terrorist attack in Sydney.

‘He leaves behind his wife, young children, as well as my uncle and aunt, and his siblings.

‘He was truly an incredible guy.’

Rabbi Schlanger was the head of the Chabad mission in Bondi where he had served the community for nearly two decades.

Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman (pictured below) was also killed in the attack.

His wife Larisa Kleytman told the Daily Mail her husband of five decades died trying to save her.

‘I think he was shot because he raised himself up to protect me, in the back of the head,’ she said.

Two gunman arrived at Campbell Parade on the edge of Bondi Beach and exited their vehicle.

A black ISIS-style flag was seen draped over the hood of the car.
Video footage showed them making their way to a pedestrian footbridge and opening fire towards a grassy area known as Archer Park.

A community festival celebrating Hanukkah was being held in that vicinity.

The Chanukah by the Sea event was a family-focused gathering to celebrate the first day of the eight day Jewish Festival of Lights.

ASIO has admitted that one of the shooters was on their radar.

‘One of these individuals was known to us, but not in an immediate threat perspective,’ ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said on Sunday night

‘So obviously we need to look into what happened.’

ASIO has since committed to reviewing the issue and searching for others who might be plotting similar attacks, though its director general stressed there was no indication anyone else in the community had a similar intent.

The shooting has officially been declared a terrorist incident, which will allow ASIO, the Australian Federal Police and its state counterpart to deploy special powers as it investigates the shooting.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also hinted additional funding for security for the Jewish community – a recommendation of the Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism Jillian Segal – would be considered.

The FBI is assisting Australian agencies.
