X-rated Keir Starmer chant at World Darts Championship forces Sky Sports into motion
With the PDC World Darts Championship drawing plenty of raucous crowds, the fans made their feelings clear over British Prime Minister Keir Starmer with several chants throughout the tournament so far
Sky Sports censored the crowd sound at the Alexandra Palace after fans watching the PDC World Darts Championship directed X-rated chants at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
It came during Friday night’s action in the competition, which often draws lively crowds who enjoy the atmosphere as well as the action on the stage, with plenty of demand for tickets going to fans before the competition, which is gaining quite a reputation.
Several chants are well known during Worlds, but the latest popular singalong, which is aimed at Starmer, has been making its way through the Alexandra Palace halls throughout the contest.
Fans have been regularly heard singing “Keir Starmer’s a w*****,” to the tune of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, which has forced the broadcasters to step in on occasion.
Sky Sports has used an effect to drown out the crowd noise when required, stepping in to stop the offensive language coming through.
The raucous crowd have been in fine voice throughout the tournament so far, being thoroughly entertained by the action they have seen, even with the first round only just coming to an end.
The favourites for the tournament, Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, made it through their matches with relative ease to book themselves into the second round.
Meanwhile, Michael van Gerwen survived a scare against Mitsuhiko Tatsunami as part of a day that was filled with shocks in every session.
Darts fans have been spoiled with some great performances and top characters so far, which included David Munyua’s unbelievable comeback against Mike De Decker – battling back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, making history as the first Kenyan on the Worlds stage.
While the Ally Pally crowd have often been praised, there were strong words from De Decker about the treatment he received from the supporters during his match.
Taking to Instagram after his defeat, he said: “Well done to David, but the crowd wow… booing and whistling shouldn’t be something that’s normal or supported.
“First to complain when it happens to UK players in Europe but then doing the exact same thing when the tournament is in the UK.”
It’s not the first time that the treatment of darts stars on the stage has been criticised, while the organisers find out how to balance the atmosphere with hostility.
