Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor: Everything you need to know about his gun licence surrender

  • The former duke voluntarily surrendered his firearms and shotgun certificate after Metropolitan Police licensing officers visited Royal Lodge on November 19 and spoke to a valet.
  • Police confirmed the voluntary surrender but would not disclose the reason, stating it followed a routine assessment and College of Policing guidance. The case is understood to be under review.
  • The surrender means he can no longer host or attend shooting parties and can only use or transport his guns if supervised.
  • One reported factor in the decision is his expected move from Royal Lodge to Sandringham Estate in Norfolk in the new year, and gun licence holders must inform the authorities about how their weapons will be stored at their new address.
  • This blow follows the stripping of royal titles and eviction from the Royal Lodge by King Charles in October. He remains under scrutiny for his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and a civil sexual assault claim, which he settled for millions in 2022 while denying the allegations.
  • Andrew has a long history with hunting, including being photographed at a clay pigeon shoot in 1986. In his infamous Newsnight interview. He denied throwing a birthday party for Ghislaine Maxwell at Sandringham, insisting it was a “straightforward shooting weekend.”
