Olly Murs booed at World Darts Championship as fan disagreement breaks out
Olly Murs was spotted at the World Darts Championship on Tuesday afternoon – with his appearance resulting in a disagreement between Ally Pally viewers.
Music star Olly Murs was given a mixed reception when he was shown on the big screen at Ally Pally taking in the PDC World Darts Championship. Day 13 of the tournament, and the final eight matches before the Christmas break, have already commenced with Murs among those taking in the action.
Ahead of the first meeting this afternoon, between Ryan Meikle and Jonny Tata, Murs was interviewed live on Sky Sports Darts. The singer admitted he loves the sport and enjoyed watching Charlie Manby impress in his whitewash victory over Adam Sevada on Monday evening.
Although he’s clearly a big fan of the darts, those in attendance on Tuesday afternoon were not too pleased by his appearance. Murs was booed upon being picked out by the cameras and placed on to the big screen.
It was a 50/50 reaction on social media, however, with some viewers not so thrilled by his presence. @thersw wrote to X: “Things we want to see: Darts things we don’t want to see: Olly Murs.”
@OldManWinter999 added: “Booing Olly Murs. Sensational from the Ally Pally crowd.” Others were pleased at seeing him, though, while also being confused at the reaction.
@emilypaffett_ stated: “Olly Murs at the darts [four heart eye emojis].” @LittleMissDarts said: “Why they booing Olly Murs?!” The official PDC account on X also made note of Murs and promoted his brand new song ‘Christmas Starts Tonight’ with the response again varied.
Including a link to listen to the song, their post read: “Great to have @ollymurs in the house today. Check out his brand new song ‘Christmas Starts Tonight’ with the Ordinary Boys on the PDC Game Shot Playlist on Spotify.”
@remiaxyz replied: “Olly Murs on the darts playlist is elite.” @Tom_Christmas_ said: “Finally, something to save Christmas from being a total snooze fest. However, some other viewers were not as keen.
@GSR156_ wrote: “I’ll give it a miss, thanks.” @haliily40 added: “That is true??? No, no, no [thumbs down emoji].”
The 41-year-old was treated to some excellent darts from those in action with Meikle completing a sensational comeback against Tata in the opener.
Callan Rydz then defeated Daryl Guerney in a deciding set with the former pinning a 167 checkout twice before breaking his opponents throw and winning the final set 5-3 in legs.
No.19 seed Jermaine Wattimena appeared set to be cruising to a victory over Scott Williams, but the Englishmen fought back from two sets down to level the second round contest.
However, the Dutchman won all three legs in that final set and he will therefore be back after Christmas to face either ex-world champion Gary Anderson or Connor Scutt.
