Ruben Amorim’s explosive row with Man Utd star as ‘intense’ Carrington spat claims made

Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United head coach and details of his final few weeks at Carrington have come to light including an explosive row with one of his players

Ruben Amorim, the outgoing boss of Manchester United, allegedly had a heated confrontation with defender Lisandro Martinez during a training session last month.

The Argentinian player felt he was ready to start and thought that the Portuguese head coach was neglecting him. Martinez reportedly expressed his concerns to the head coach in an “intense” manner before matches against Crystal Palace and West Ham United, but Amorim is said to have reacted positively to the challenge.

The defender didn’t make it into a starting XI until the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle United, after which he was appointed captain for Amorim’s final two games in charge against Wolves and Leeds United.

According to the report by the Athletic, this was a sign of admiration from Amorim towards Martinez, who liked ‘his energy. ‘ It also suggests that some United players desired better communication from Amorim, despite his affable and generous demeanour with fans and regular staff.

Amorim was dismissed following a fiery post-match press conference after the draw with Leeds United, where he called out Jason Wilcox and demanded the sporting director ‘do his job.’

After the match, Amorim stated: “Guys, to stop with that, and I noticed that you received selective information about everything. I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. That is clear.

“I know that my name is not Tuchel, is not Conte, is not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United. It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decided to change. That was my point. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until other guy is coming here to replace me.

“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that. That is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on.

“That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticises of everything, we need to change the club.

“No, no guys, I would say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach.

“Every department, the scouting department, the sport director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on. Thank you, guys.”

Manchester United deemed his situation unsustainable and issued a statement confirming his exit yesterday afternoon.

The statement declared: ” Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”

According to the Manchester Evening News, the club are content with Darren Fletcher steering the first-team ship for more than just one match as they consider their options for a permanent replacement for Ruben Amorim.
