England icon Martin Chivers lifeless as Tottenham lead tributes to ‘all-time nice’

England and Tottenham Hotspur legend Martin Chivers has died aged 80.

Chivers, who made 367 appearances for Spurs, was hailed as one of the all-time greats by the club – who announced his death on social media on Wednesday (January 7). In a post on X, Spurs said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin’s family, friends and former team-mates at this incredibly sad time. Our players will wear black armbands during this evening’s fixture against AFC Bournemouth. Rest in peace, Martin. One of the all-time greats.”

Chivers, who was born in Southampton, was an icon in north London – netting 174 goals for the Lilywhites. He helped Spurs to two League Cups and a UEFA Cup during eight years at White Hart Lane.

And his tally of 22 goals on the continent was a club record until it was broken by Jermain Defoe in 2013. Across his career, Chivers also turned out for home town club Southampton, Norwich, and Brighton.

He also made 24 appearances for England, finding the back of the net 13 times.

Former Spurs star Steve Archibald paid tribute to Chivers: “Watched the great Martin Chivers before I became a pro, was an amazing watch.

“He was like Rolls Royce, so smooth in his movement, excellent in the air and a great finisher, but on top of all of that he was a really nice guy. Most sincere condolences to all of Martin’s family xxx.”
