Starmer ‘may ship troops to Greenland’ as NATO weighs mission after Trump threats

The UK could send troops to Greenland as part of a NATO mission as Donald Trump threatens to take the territory from Denmark, with military chiefs reportedly working on plans

Britain could deploy troops to Greenland as Donald Trump threatens to seize the territory from Denmark.

This development comes as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reportedly aligns with President Trump’s assessment that decisive action is required to safeguard Western interests against Russian and Chinese threats.

Nevertheless, Sir Keir made it clear to Trump during a telephone conversation earlier this week that only Denmark and Greenland possess the authority to determine the territory’s destiny. The phone discussion between the two world leaders has triggered a series of diplomatic manoeuvres. The PM is now set to hold discussions with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and NATO chief Mark Rutte, reports the Express.

The US President has rekindled debate about obtaining Greenland, which currently remains under Danish sovereignty as part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Sir Keir engaged in talks with the US President on Thursday, before connecting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.

Downing Street revealed that the leaders explored how NATO must “step up” its presence in the High North, encompassing Greenland, to counter Russian advances.

Reports suggest military commanders are developing proposals for a potential NATO operation in Greenland.

Officials informed The Telegraph: “We share President Trump’s view – Russia’s growing aggression in the High North must be deterred, and Euro-Atlantic security strengthened.

“NATO discussions on reinforcing security in the region continue, and we would never get ahead of those. But the UK is working with NATO allies to drive efforts to bolster Arctic deterrence and defence.

“The UK will continue to work with allies – as we always have – on operations in our national interest, protecting people back at home.”

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey stated: “The UK should offer to send troops to Greenland as part of a joint NATO operation under Danish and UK command.

“If Trump is serious about security, he’d agree to participate and drop his outrageous threats. Tearing the NATO alliance apart would only play into the hands of Putin.”

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office confirmed: “The UK is committed to working with NATO allies to strengthen NATO’s Arctic deterrence and defence.”
