West Ham star stretchered off with head harm after sickening collision

West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was stretchered off during the FA Cup tie against QPR after suffering a worrying head injury in a scary collision

West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was carried off on a stretcher during his team’s FA Cup clash against Queens Park Rangers following a worrying head injury. Mavropanos underwent extensive medical attention just before the interval after his head collided with a defender’s knee.

The incident happened when the 28-year-old went up for a corner in the QPR penalty area. Following treatment, a stretcher was eventually brought onto the field, and the Greek centre-back was carefully transported before being taken down the tunnel.

Both sets of fans showed their support as Mavropanos was removed from the pitch. QPR posted a supportive message for Mavropanos shortly after he was stretchered off.

The message stated: “Into added time after lengthy treatment for West Ham’s Mavropanos. We wish him well.”

Mavropanos was brought in by Arsenal in January 2018 but managed just seven Premier League outings before moving to the Hammers three years ago. He was substituted by Pablo Felipe as nine minutes were tacked on at the end of the first half.

During injury time, the Hammers broke the deadlock when Crysencio Summerville found the net past Joe Walsh in the QPR goal.

Speaking ahead of the match, Hammers manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressed his hope that a strong FA Cup campaign could help lift spirits as they navigate through a challenging Premier League season. The Irons entered this afternoon’s fixture without a victory in their previous 10 outings.

Nuno stated: “We’re in a tough situation, and we’re aware of that. But at the same time, we have to be aware that there are still 17 games to play in the Premier League.

“We have a lot of football still to play, so what we have to do now is focus on ourselves and on our day-to-day work. We have to look for that win that we need and not get too obsessed with the gap [in the table].

“Now we have the FA Cup to concentrate on, and then next week we’ll prepare for the Tottenham match.

“Our approach must be to focus on ourselves and what we have to do. It’s a good chance to win a football match, which is what we need.

“Things change when you’re winning. You recover faster, and you are more happy, so we’re fully focused on trying to win the match against a tough team in a competition we appreciate a lot.”
