Woman, 35, crushed to dying over witchcraft allegations between feuding neighbours
A woman has allegedly been beaten to death with bricks, stones and iron rods as part of an ongoing feud between neighbours over claims of witchcraft
A 35-year-old woman was brutally killed and two others were seriously injured after a horrific feud between neighbouring families over accusations of witchcraft turned violent.
The deceased has been identified as Kiran Devi, who lost her life after a neighbouring family blamed her for a child’s sickness, accusing her of engaging in witchcraft.
Relatives of Kiran claim the family, named as Mukesh Chaudhary, Mahendra Chaudhary, Natru Chaudhary and Shobha Devi, are alleged to have attacked Kiran with bricks, stones and iron rods in a merciless assault. During this horrific incident, Kiran’s younger sister-in-law, Lalita Devi and another elder sister-in-law were also injured. Kiran‘s husband, Naresh Choudhary, was among those injured during the incident.
All the wounded members were immediately taken to the sub-divisional hospital. The attending doctor administered first aid but referred them to the district hospital due to severe blood loss. Tragically, Kiran passed away while travelling to the hospital. Rekha Devi, the victim’s sister-in-law, shared that Mukesh Chaudhary’s child had fallen ill and was diagnosed with a brain-related issue by a doctor – sparking an accusation of witchcraft.
Despite a medical explanation, neighbours persisted in blaming Kiran, labelling her a witch and accusing her of evil practices, which resulted in the fatal attack. Ranjit Kumar, the station house officer at Nawada’s Rajauli, reported an ongoing feud between two related families in the area sparked the conflict. He confirmed four to five individuals from both factions sustained injuries.
Three people have been detained for further questioning. A forensic team has gathered evidence surrounding the incident. Kiran’s body will be returned to the family following a post-mortem. Police have announced an investigation is currently underway.
