Team GB star not letting Super Bowl social gathering stand in his means of Olympic gold

Marcus Wyatt is heading to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics as a real medal hope in the men’s skeleton.

Marcus Wyatt is letting nothing stand between him and his tilt at Olympic glory – not even the prospect of a late-night Super Bowl party.

The 34-year-old heads to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics as a real medal hope in the men’s skeleton alongside compatriot Matt Weston.

Between them, the pair won every single World Cup race this season with two-time world champion Weston many people’s favourite for Olympic gold.

Wyatt is among those hoping to usurp his team-mate at the top of the podium and the Honiton slider is determined to leave no stone unturned.

It was why he could see the bright side of his beloved Buffalo Bills’ exit from the NFL play-offs to avoid the prospect of some missed sleep during the Games.

“I stayed up a bit too late to watch us miss out on another Super Bowl,” said the Honiton ace. “There is 0.1 per cent of me is happy I don’t have to make a decision in Cortina on whether I should stay up to 5am, when I think we’ve got training the next morning. That decision was made for me.

“Everyone is at the top of their game at the moment. It’s a flow state. That can be on the sled or it can be week to week in the other stuff, working with coaches and you’re on the same page. It comes easily and naturally.”

Wyatt heads to Cortina with his fortunes transformed from Beijing 2022, when he finished 16th on Olympic debut as part of an underwhelming British campaign.

That led to plenty of changes behind the scenes within the skeleton programme, but he also believes he is now a completely different athlete from four years ago.

“I feel like I am riding the crest of a wave at the moment,” he said.

“The last season, the last four years have gone so well. It has been amazing. We have gone from strength to strength off the back of Beijing.

“I am ultimately super happy to be going into Cortina aiming for a medal because it is absolutely possible.

“At my first Games, I allowed myself to be overawed and taken in by all these sights and sounds. It was a lot.

“This time I know what to expect, from the village, from the food hall, from seeing the Olympic rings on the course. This time it’s about going in, doing my job and having a big party afterwards.”

Any celebration party will be well attended by the Wyatt clan, with a big group of family and friends making the trip out – something Wyatt believes will bring the best out of him come race day

“I have quite a big group coming, about 20 family and friends. When I look back at some of my best results in the past, it’s been when people have come and watched.

“I seem to find that extra gear when people are watching me which holds me in good stead.”
