Ice skater’s face slashed in horror Winter Olympics accident throughout race

GRAPHIC WARNING: Kamila Sellier cut her face on a competitor’s blade after falling during the Winter Olympics women’s 1500 meters speed skating competition in Milan

Speed skater Kamila Sellier’s left eye is said to be OK after a competitor’s blade sliced just above it following a fall during the women’s 1500 meters competition.

Sellier, 25, was stretchered out of the ice skating arena in Milan on Friday night after receiving stitches, according to Polish officials. The skater has since gone to the hospital for more tests, but gave a thumbs up to the crowd before leaving the arena.

A white sheet came out to shield her from the eyes of those in attendance while receiving treatment. Sellier left behind a blood trail on the track.

American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold was penalised for an illegal lane pass, which prevented her from progressing to the quarterfinal. Ariana Fontana also went down at the same time, but Italy’s 15-time Olympic medalist advanced and reached the final.

An unnamed member of Poland’s coaching staff reportedly told CBC that he believed Sellier suffered a facial fracture. However, that has yet to be confirmed.

Poland speed skating’s press attaché, Konrad Niedzwiedzki, said Sellier cut her cheek and eyelid. The former Olympian added, via translation: “We are waiting for what the hospital tests will show.”

Sellier teammate Natalia Maliszewska told reporters in Polish: “My thoughts are with her. I can’t think of anything else.”

Another compatriot, Gabriela Topolska, added: “These aren’t common accidents, but they do happen. Kamila already has one of them, from a skate on her face. Kamila has a cut in her skin, with stitches.”
